TV anchors are cautioned by NBC not to bully guests in order to maintain objectivity

Due to violations of Nigerian broadcasting laws, the Nigerian government has issued warnings to television anchors and broadcasters.

In a disclosed notice to stations on Friday, the National Broadcasting Commission, or NBC, issued the warning.

The warning, according to NBC, coincides with an alleged increase in unprofessional broadcast behaviour on Nigerian news broadcast platforms.

Arise Television, Channels TV, and other broadcasters were informed by the regulator that all of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code’s provisions, especially those pertaining to fairness, balance, accuracy, hate speech, incitement, and respect for constitutional bodies, would be strictly and uncompromisingly enforced.

NBC cautioned broadcasters to handle political, social, and military matters with professionalism.

“The broadcaster must handle the transmission with professionalism, particularly when it comes to delicate subjects like politics, intercommunal disputes, and wars.

In particular, it threatened to punish anchors or presenters who were deemed to have disrespected human dignity, bullied or intimidated a guest, conveyed personal opinion as fact, or otherwise compromised neutrality.
