Senator Ireti Kingibe responds to the soldiers’ shooting of a NYSC member

Senator Ireti Heebah Kingibe, who represents the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, has conveyed profound sorrow regarding the death of Abdulsamad Jamiu, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, who was purportedly killed by Nigerian Army soldiers.

The unfortunate incident occurred when soldiers of the Guards Brigade Quick Response Group responded to a distress call following an armed robbery attack in the area while on routine night patrol, according to 460PLAY.

Kingibe issued a statement on Monday in which he expressed profound sorrow regarding the tragic incident.

“The tragic death of Abdulsamad Jamiu, a young Nigerian who was killed in an unfortunate incident involving personnel of the Nigerian Army, has deeply saddened and heartbroken me.”

“The immediate necessity for increased caution and professionalism in all security operations is underscored by this painful loss, which serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of life.” Although preliminary reports suggest that this was an unintentional shooting, the repercussions are irreversible and catastrophic.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the parents, family, and loved ones of the deceased.” The sorrow of losing a child in such circumstances is beyond comprehension, and we, as a nation, are compelled to empathise with their anguish. Especially when their child was serving the country with dedication under the National Youth Service Corps scheme, no family should be compelled to endure such anguish.

“I am grateful for the Nigerian Army’s response to this incident. Nevertheless, she emphasised that a comprehensive, transparent, and accountable investigation is necessary to guarantee that justice is administered and that lessons are derived, in addition to the response.

“The urgent necessity to enhance the coordination between security agencies and civilians, strengthen the rules of engagement, and guarantee the complete protection of our young Nigerians, particularly corps members, is underscored by this tragic incident.” This type of incident must never occur again.

“In my capacity as the Senator of the Federal Capital Territory, I will persist in my efforts to advocate for reforms that prioritise the safety of our citizens and re-establish public trust in our security institutions by collaborating with the appropriate authorities.

“May Abdulsamad Jamiu’s soul rest in peace, and may God grant his family the fortitude to endure this irreparable loss,” she concluded.
