On Friday, a faction within the labour movement in Osun State organised a May Day rally to encourage political leaders at the local government level to prioritise the welfare of workers.
The Association of Concerned Local Government Workers, a group, also expressed its endorsement of the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Oyebamiji.
The rally was held at the Olorunda Local Government Council secretariat in Igbona, Osogbo, where workers convened in a variety of uniformed groups.
Samuel Idowu, the factional chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in the state, was saluted during the parade.
The coordinator of the group, Adedayo Adekunle, urged for the cessation of the casualization of employees in government institutions during his address.
“We demand that permanent job offers be prioritised over casual or temporary employment for graduates,” he stated.
As Adekunle put it, casualization is “barbaric, enslaving, and unappealing to the most brilliant minds.”
Additionally, he underscored the significance of workplace safety, asserting, “Workplace safety is non-negotiable.” Adequate attention should be given to all necessary measures to guarantee the protection of employees.
The coordinator also stated that proactive engagement between employers and employees could mitigate industrial disputes.
“Strikes are detrimental to all of us, and social dialogue serves as an effective preventative measure.” “We recommend that you prioritise employee feedback and respond promptly to their enquiries,” he stated.
Adekunle stated that the group had evaluated the APC candidate for the upcoming governorship election and determined him to be suitable.
“Our association has determined that the APC candidate is a deserving leader following a comprehensive evaluation.” Consequently, we urge all of our members to lend him their support,” he declared.
Idowu reassured the attendees that the welfare of labourers was a top priority for local government administrations.
He stated that the council chairmen would prioritise the development of capacity, the improvement of working conditions, and the prompt payment of remuneration.
“Salary arrears owed to traditional rulers in the state have been paid since we assumed office,” Idowu stated.
He also stated that infrastructure projects and empowerment initiatives, such as road rehabilitation and support for security agencies, had been implemented by local governments.
During the event, both formal and informal sector workers delivered presentations.
Additionally, members of the Osun Youth Empowerment Scheme (OYES) participated in a ceremonial march past.
In the interim, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) each organised their own May Day celebration at the Fakunle Government Comprehensive High School in Osogbo.
